Protect Funding for Essential Food Security Programs!
Senate Agriculture Ranking Member John Boozman’s proposed Farm Bill threatens more than 41.4 million people who rely on SNAP for food security with a nearly $30 billion cut in funding over the next decade.
The proposal will restrict updates to the USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan and prevent benefits from increasing relative to inflation, thereby providing less assistance to those facing food insecurity, and worsening disparities in access to healthy diets. 1 in 7 Massachusetts residents (15%) relies on SNAP benefits to maintain nutritional security, and more than half of all participants are in families with children or disabled adults. Additionally, more than 30% of SNAP participants are in working families.
The proposed cuts would privatize the process for determining SNAP eligibility prioritizing profits over the needs of many families. Funding cuts would make it more difficult for families-- like those EMPath serves-- to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet. Further, SNAP stimulates economic activity, generating $1.50 to $1.80 for each dollar in benefits.
